NEW DELHI: The centre has allocated the wage dues of workers coming under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) which they have not received for the last five months. The centre permitted wage dues of Rs 1511 crore following the intervention of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The office of the chief minister informed that the workers will get the amount before Vishu.
The workers under MGNREGA had not obtained their wages from last November. This led to verbal arguments between the central and state governments. Following this, the chief minister had sent many letters to the centre. The opposition blamed the state government for it and asked them to budge pressure on the centre.
Almost 15 lakh people are working under MGNREGA in Kerala. 80% of it are women. The workers are currently getting Rs 271 as daily wages. The chief minister had sent a letter to the Prime Minister requesting him to grant the amount as early as possible. Considering the floods in Kerala, 50 working days were allotted additionally.
