THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is a massive inflow of black money, gold, and drugs in the state in light of the upcoming elections. As per official data, Rs 16 crores of illegal currency, Rs 1.65 crores worth of gold and 500 kilograms of ganja has been seized. Malappuram and Palakkad are at top of districts with possession of illegal money and gold. The Election Commission has tasked IG P. Vijayan to keep a close watch on such money that might have an effect on election campaigns.
There are three teams of flying squads, static squads and police group at every constituency to check irregularities in election campaigns. Excise and Income Tax department will cover state borders.
There are special intelligence teams for tracking down illegal currency at airports.
All donations for candidates should be made through bank accounts. The money for campaigns should be spent under the guidelines of the election commission. There is a special direction for banks to inform the authorities if a person withdraws more than Rs 10 lakhs.
