THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala just witnessed one of the highest polling percentages in the recent past. All three fronts are hopeful that the spirit at the polling station will boost their chances.
Congress believes that the high polling is due to anti-administrative feel against the BJP. CPI (M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that everything point towards a historic win for the LDF. The record polling at Wayanad is seen as the polarization of minorities by the UDF.
Meanwhile, the increase in polling percentage at the southern constituencies is also interesting. Thiruvananthapuram and Pathanamthitta are two constituencies where the BJP came up with a strong showing. The saffron party keeps Thiruvananthapuram as their most hopeful constituency.
After Rahul Gandhi himself came to Kerala to lead the election proceedings by deciding to contest at Wayanad, the UDF leadership expects up to 16 seats. LDF is hopeful of winning 13 seats in light of their recent successes at by-elections and Assembly election. BJP sources are confident about winning up to four seats.
The highest polling recorded in the state was in the 1989 Lok Sabha election when 79.30 percent of voters made it to the polling booths. UDF won 17 out of 20 seats back then. Vadakara was the constituency with the highest polling in 2014 (81.45) and the lowest was at Pathanamthitta (66.02).
