KOTTAYAM: Old Nagampadam railway over bridge will be demolished within a few minutes. The decisions is to bring it down through controlled explosion using small explosive materials.
Though this method is used to avoid excess pollution and interruption of train service, the railways have placed restriction for train services along Kottayam route.
It was decided to demolish the bridge built in 1953 after a new bridge was built as part of railway track doubling.
When Kottayam railway line was electrified, the bridge was raised up a little.
But as the width of the bridge was less, as per a court order, the trains were allowed to ply through the bridge at reduced speed.
Though it was decided to demolish the bridge much early, the work had to be put off due to festival holidays and election.
A Chennai-based company is has taken over the work to demolish the bridge.
There will also be traffic restriction on MC Road during the time of demolishing of the railway over bridge. Explosives have already been placed in different spots of the bridge. The electric lines under the bridge have been removed. After that the bridge will be safely covered with wood logs and sand sacks, ahead of the explosion.
Railway officials informed that work for restoring the service will started soon after the demolition of the building.
