MALAPPURAM: The farmers are having a hard time as their agriculture has been hit by summer followed by the rains. In the drought and heavy rains, the state suffered agriculture losses spanning over 2,947 hectares worth Rs 108.04 crores.
As per data from the Agriculture Dept. the state suffered agriculture losses of Rs 44.61 crores spreading over 1,899 hectares and Rs 63.43 crores over 1,048 hectares during summer rainfalls. As govt. compensation only a meager amount can be expected. As most of the farmers don’t insure their crops, they usually suffer major losses. This will make it hell for those who took loans from private firms.
Alappuzha, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Kasaragod are the districts where the crops were hit by drought and rain. Ernakulam and Kottayam were mainly distraught by rains.
Paddy and plantain agriculture were the ones that suffered major losses.
