KOCHI: Criticism has been raised against the Cochin City Police for their negligence in investigating a vehicle smuggling team that sells vehicles submerged in flood waters for terrorism and drug smuggling. On a probe conducted by a retired police chief, shocking details came up. The City Police Commissioner was given a detailed complaint on this.

After a quick primary investigation, the case lost its steam once it was transferred to Circle Inspector level. Riyas Aboobacker, who is in the custody of NIA for ISIS case, had revealed about his earlier intention to be a suicide bomber. Mahavir, a Chennai native, is the head of this vehicle smuggling group. He was a member of police crime squad in Chennai City Police, who is now under suspension for his involvement in some criminal cases. On primary investigation, he was found to be in hiding. The retired Police chief, who filed the complaint, also reached out to Chennai in search of Mahavir. Even after selling the car to the retired officer, Mahavir didn’t change the ownership of the vehicle. After three days of search, the officer found Mahavir, but he couldn’t change the ownership of the car. Meanwhile, the retired officer learned that Mahavir is a police officer as well. He approached the Chennai DCP and informed him about this. In the probe that followed, details about Mahavir’s con group was found.
