NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court gave permission to use chain palm crackers in the fireworks display of Thrissur Pooram. The deputy explosive controller had earlier denied permission to use it. The apex court passed the order on the pleas of Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi devaswoms. The apex court’s stand was that let the agency concerned with it decide whether to burst it or not. Justice Bobde had earlier asserted that the court cannot give permission which cracker to burst and which not.
The court had given permission to conduct the fireworks display like how it was used last time. Meantime, officials of Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) assessed that bursting the chain palm crackers together would be a violation of an old verdict of the Supreme Court. The devaswom approached the court again following it.
The Supreme Court had passed a verdict in October 2018 curbing the making, sale and use of crackers following fireworks accidents. The court had then permitted to make, sell and burst crackers which poorly pollute and not environmentally damaged. In this context the devaswoms approached the court again seeking clarification in the order. Both the devaswoms argued in the court that the ban imposed during Diwali is not applicable for Thrissur pooram having a display license. Taking this into account, the court gave permission to use chain palm crackers.
