THODUPUZHA: The remand report in the Nedumkandam custodial death has been exposed. The report said there are four accused in the case. Only the first and fourth accused have been arrested. Two more accused are there. They are also policemen.
Remand report said the four accused unjustly assaulted Rajkumar brutally. The crime branch had asserted that in the probe conducted it was understood that he was brutally tortured in custody from the evening of June 12 to June 15 till his arrest was recorded.
The remand report has mentioned manipulation in the station documents. Crime branch produced the details in the court after confiscating the station documents.
Rajkumar was brutally assaulted on both his legs and feet. He was subjected to such brutality to find the money cheated. Sajeev Antony, the police driver and the fourth accused in the case tortured him at Vandiperiyar. Though sub inspector Sabu was with them, he never tried to stop the assault. Accused from one to fourth assaulted him in the station.
He was not given medical treatment even in such a weak condition. The crime branch found that Rajkumar died of pneumonia due to non-availability of treatment at the right time. It is in this context that a case has been registered against the accused policemen for other charges including murder. The second and the third accused are absconding.
Strict action will be taken against Idukki SP K B Venugopal in connection with his death. He will be removed from the post, but will not be given a new charge. Further steps will be taken after the report of the investigating team.
Meantime, Rajkumar’s mother Kasthuri has sought a CBI probe on the incident. She said she is not satisfied with the crime branch probe and not only police men top officials too have a role in the incident.
