THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The order of the transport secretary has made mandatory wearing helmets by pillion riders of two wheelers and seat belt for those sitting in the back seat of the car. The DGP and the Transport Commissioner have been instructed to tighten inspection. This was mentioned in the letter sent to the transport commissioner on July 6.
The transport secretary has written to the state police chief and the traffic commissioner to tighten vehicle inspection as per the new order. The secretary has mentioned in the letter that the Supreme Court verdict had made the safety rules mandatory. Except Kerala, all other states have implemented the verdict. The letter has asked officials of Kerala Motor Vehicle department and Kerala Police to ensure these safety rules are adhered to.
Meantime, there is widespread concern among motorists over the hasty implementation of the Supreme Court order. There are complaints that the order was issued by the commissioner without the consent of the office of the transport minister.
