MUKKAM: Person caught during a robbery in Shanthi Jewellery in Omassery has been identified as Noweem Ali, a Bangladesh native. He was overpowered by the jewellery staff while the rest of the robbers escaped. He fainted after getting caught and was entered into hospital. Later when quizzed by the police, he revealed some key information, it is learnt. After staying in Poolapoyil near Omassery and Kalanthodu in Chathamangalam Panchayat, they planned this robbery for several days. Shanthi Jewellery was selected for theft as the shop was located in a rather desolated area.
The plan was to rob the entire gold inside the jewellery by threatening the staff with a gun. The robbers also planned to sell this gold in Bengal or Jharkhand and then return to their native place. Their plan didn’t go as desired due to the timely intervention of the jewellery staff. The police have received information about the other robbers after quizzing Noweem Ali. A local pistol which found in Ali’s possession was seized by the police. This was bought in Bangladesh. The robbers planned to open fire and create panic in an event of a crisis, it is learnt.
Dog squad and forensic experts inspected the spot. The robbery was on Saturday night when a team of three masked perpetrators robbed the jewellery after threatening the staff with gun. 15 gold bangles each weighing 12.5 sovereigns were lost.
