THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The KSU (Kerala Students’ Union), the student’s wing of the Congress party has called for a State-wide education bandh on Tuesday in protest against the police attack on the strike pandal in front of the Secretariat and KSU/Youth Congress activities on Monday.

The police had lathi-charged the Youth Congress workers who had taken out a march to the strike pandal in support of the KSU workers.

The workers and policemen came face-to-face and clashed. KSU State president K M Abhijith and a few others were shifted to hospital.

The march taken out by the Youth Congress had reached Secretariat by 12:30 noon. Soon after the inaugural address of Youth Congress president Dean Kuriakose, the strikers tried to pull down the barricades and tried to march into the Secretariat. The police then fired water cannon at the workers.

The situation turned from bad to worse when strikers threw glass bottles, wooden logs and stones at the police, which provoked them to hurl back grenades and tear gas shells.

Many including the policemen and media persons were injured in the melee. Later the Youth Congress announced the takeover of the KSU strike.

Dean Kuriakose also informed that the Youth Congress would begin a 24-hr strike in front of the PSC head office.
