ABUDHABI: The years-long wait is finally over. The process of transferring prisoners between India and UAE will begin soon. According to that, prisoners in both jails will be transferred. They could serve the remaining prison term in jails in their home country. This was announced by Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan. A joint committee will come into existence to monitor the transfer of prisoners. India and UAE signed the bilateral agreement in transferring prisoners on November 23 in 2011. The UAE cabinet took two years to approve this deal.
Almost 350 Indian prisoners in UAE have signed the consent form to transfer them to jails of their home country. However, many returned home after their punishment was waived. Nearly 100 inmates will soon be transferred to jails of their home country. Even if they reach India, chances are less for their punishment to get waived. The inmates can see their dear ones in jails. While replying in the Lok Sabha, V Muraleedharan said the ‘Transfer of Sentenced Persons’ between India and UAE will soon come into effect.
