THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Dress code has always been a hot topic for debate in State’s colleges with many of them banning Jeans, leggings and miniskirts. Recently Sreelekshmi, a student of Thiruvananthapuram Government B.Ed College, has come up with a Facebook post accusing teachers of moral policing within the campus.
Sreelekshmi shared that when she first reached the college to take admission, a teacher warned her against wearing Leggings and jeans. According to the teacher, students must only wear loose Churidars within the campus. Sreelekshmi further added that another teacher even went to the extent of saying, “You must wear the shawl properly to make sure that those meant to be hidden are hidden.” The student also added a story written by her classmate which was forbidden by the teachers in the name of morality.
While college authorities maintain that dress codes are implemented so as to maintain the dignity and discipline in the campus, students complain that it is actually moral policing that is taking place in the name of maintaining decency and dignity.
