THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A case has been booked against Wafa Firoz, who was inside the car that hit media person K.M. Basheer, resulting in his death. She has been charged for encouraging rash driving, which is a bailable offence.
Earlier, the police recorded the arrest of IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman at the private hospital where he is under treatment. He has been charged with non-bailable sections of the IPC. A case has been registered under section IPC 279 (rash driving on a public way) and 304A (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) against the two accused.
As per the sections charged, he could be sentenced to 10 years in jail. Sriram will be jailed for a minimum of 30 days before he can get bail.
The accident was in front of the public office near Museum Police Station at around 1.30 am. Only Sriram and Wafa was inside the car. Basheer was returning home after a meeting of Siraj daily in Kollam.
