526-teeth

CHENNAI: Ravindranath, a seven-year-old boy from Chennai, recently complained to his parents of severe pain and swelling in his jaw. Upon examining his mouth, dentists were shocked to find that the boy has around 526 teeth growing in his mouth.

The shocking finding was made by the dentists at Saveetha Dental College in Chennai. According to reports, the dentist initially found a huge structure which was causing the pain. However, the X-Ray report suggested that the structure contained 526 teeth inside it. They later removed the teeth through minor surgery. “We opened up the jaw after administering general anesthesia and saw a bag/sack inside it,” said P. Senthilnathan, a professor at Saveetha Dental College. “The sack, weighing about 200 grams, was carefully removed and was later found to contain 526 teeth — small, medium, and large,” he added.

According to surgeons, this abnormal condition is known as compound odontoma which may occur due to genetic or environmental issues.
