FLORIDA: A teacher in Florida has been fired for giving zero marks to her students after they failed to submit their assignments. Diane Tirado, an eighth-grade history teacher, was fired from West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie for violating the ‘no zero’ policy employed by the school.
According to Diane, she had asked the students to hand over the assignment within two weeks. However, a few students failed to submit it on time due to which she gave them zero marks. However, parents of the students complained to the school authorities by pointing out that the teacher had violated the ‘no zero’ policy mentioned in the school handbook. According to this policy, the lowest possible grade that can be awarded to a student is 50. This forced the school authorities to dismiss the teacher.
However, Diane says that she didn’t do anything wrong as the students did not submit their assignment. She also managed to write a parting message to her students which read, "Bye kids. Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life. I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50 percent for not handing anything in. Love, Mrs. Tiado."
She posted this message on her Facebook page and also accused the school authorities of spoiling the younger generations through such ridiculous policies.
