NEW DELHI: Congress Rajya Sabha MP and chief whip Bhubaneshwar Kalita resigned from the membership of the House on Monday opposing the party's stand on the abrogation of Article 370 and divergence of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that the party stand on the bill is suicidal.

“The Congress has asked me to issue a whip on the Kashmir issue. But the truth is that the mood of the nation has completely changed and this whip is against the public sentiment across the country... It seems the Congress is committing suicide with this ideology and I don't want to be part of this. I will not follow the whip and I resign”, Kalita said.

He added that the party leadership is destroying Congress and nothing can stop it.

Meanwhile, there is a rift inside the party regarding the government's bill to bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories.
