THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Action may be initiated against a top IPS officer, who allegedly protected and helped IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman sabotage the case in which the latter is accused of drunken driving and mauling down journalist K M Basheer in the car accident that happened in the wee hours of Saturday.

It is learnt that the IPS officer managed to mislead the DGP without allowing the police to collect Sriram’s blood sample and from the beginning he has been trying to help the IAS officer escape the clutches of law. This has brought bad name to the police and the government, which, on the basis of the information, is thinking about removing the IPS officer from his post.

The IPS officer misled the DGP by telling him the lie that the blood sample was collected and the investigation was in the right direction. Even this was reported only after the chief minister summoned the DGP and insisted on strong action against Sriram.

This IPS officer was junior to Srriam during Civil Services training. Soon after the accident, Sriram had called this IPS officer, seeking his help.
Policemen reached the spot and initiated legal procedures according to his instruction.

According to sources, it was this IPS officer who gave instruction to shift Sriram and his woman friend Wafa Firoz, who was with him in the car at the time of the accident, to the Museum Police station. Soon, Sriram was rushed to General hospital and the woman was sent back home in a UBER taxi. This was done to hush up the case before the media came to know about the incident.

When Sriram was sent to General hospital, the crime number was not marked on the case sheet and the police didn’t immediately collect the blood sample, though the doctor who examined had confirmed that he was drunk. It is said that the police made these face-saving acts according to the directions of the IPS officer. Besides this, Sriram, who was referred to the Medical College from the General hospital, was allowed to go into the posh comforts of KIMS hospital.
