KALPETTA: About 50 persons are suspected to have been buried alive in the landslides that occurred at Meppadi Puthumala near the Wayanad border at around 4 pm on Thursday.

In the strong landslide, Estate Padi, Mosque and a temple were completely covered with sand and water, according to locals. Witnesses say that during the mishap there were people in Estate Padi and worshipping places.

Three persons who came floating in the gushing floodwater were rescued by the people. There is no clear picture of the number of persons stranded in collapsed buildings.

Revenue Minister said that emergency help would be rushed to the flood-hit areas. Meanwhile, the State government has sought the help of the army for the rescue operations.


From Puthumala in the Vythiri taluk, videos of landslides and floods have emerged, showing buildings and mosque coming down in the strong gush of water.
