THIRUVANANTHAPURMA: Following forewarnings of extremely heavy rains in Kerala within the next 24 hours, Red Alert was declared again today (Friday) in nine districts.
Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikkode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod are those nine districts. Orange Alert has been declared in Kottayam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts and Yellow Alert has been declared in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts.
Warnings of flood have also been sounded in 11 districts. Chances for opening dam shutters are high as rain is intensifying.
Unofficial reports said 19 persons died on Friday itself. This figure is likely to increase.
Rain, wind to continue: Centre
The Indian Meteorological departments had warned that strong winds at a speed of 40-50 km/hr will hit Kerala from South West region. The fishermen have been asked not to venture out into the seas as there are chances for waves as high as 3 to 3.5 metre.
Coastal areas from Pozhiyoor to Kasargod face the risk of high sea waves and strong wind. There will be strong winds in all districts except Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad.
