foot-bridge

KASARGOD: As heavy rains continue in North Kerala, a major part of Kerala’s longest footbridge across Tejaswani river got washed away in the flood waters on Friday.

The bridge is Achamthuruthy-Kottappuram footbridge in Kasargod and it connects Neelsewaram corporation and Cheruvathur panchayat. This bridge was already in a dilapidated condition.

The 400 metre bridge was built in 2000 as a solution to travel woes of the people of Achamthuruthy Island.

The bridge was built under the aegis of Janakeeya Committee and with the help of district panchayat, Neelsewaram block panchayat, Neeleswaram and Cheruvathur panchayat.

Concrete pillars and wooden planks were mainly used for the construction of the bridge.

Though the newly built Kottappuram-Achamthuruthi road bridge was opened to the public last year, a major portion of the people in Achamthuruthy had been using this bridge.
