It was director Thambi Kannanthanam's "Rajavinte Makan' which gave the superstar tag to Mohanlal. The film which went on to gain a cult status in Malayalam cinema was written by Dennis Joseph.

According to Dennis Joseph, many people believe that it was Rajavinte Makan which was the first superhit of Mohanlal. However, he disagrees and says that it was 'Pathamudayam' directed by director Sasikumar that emerged as the actor's first super hit film. Dennis revealed this while sharing his memories about Sasikumar.

Director Sasikumar is often considered as one of the greatest directors in the history of Malayalam cinema. He had directed more than 140 films in his career with majority of them becoming superhits. The film Pathamudayam, had Mohanlal playing double role for the first time in his career.
