THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Red alert has been sounded in Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Idukki districts today and in Malappuram and Kozhikode tomorrow. The weather department director has warned that these districts are likely to experience rainfall of more than 20 cm and has asked all to be vigilant. Rain is likely to lessen on August 17. Low pressure has intensified and has reached West Bengal-Odisha coast. It is likely to strengthen in the next 48 hours.
The Meteorological Department had earlier warned of isolated heavy rains in five districts including Alappuzha and Ernakulam. The last two days have been quiet, but the new warning is a cause of concern. Orange alert was sounded in Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad and Kannur districts. There is a warning that strong wings are likely to blow at a speed of up to 55 km/hr in coastal areas and waves could rise up to 3.5 meters. Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea.
