NEW DELHI: Former Union Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley (66) passed away at AIIMS. Jaitley was rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences on August 9 after he complained of breathlessness and restlessness. After initially responding to the medication, his health deteriorated later and he was shifted to a ventilator. He passed away at 12:07 pm, reads a statement released by AIIMS.

Jaitley was a lawyer by profession and served as an advocate in several high courts and the Supreme Court. He held the finance and defence offices and had been an important part in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet in the BJP government's first term.

Jaitley did not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election presumably because of his ill-health.

He was part of ABVP during his time as a student politician.
