THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Recent studies have shown that the number of suicide cases in the Kerala police force is on the increase. The factors leading to suicide are many such as work stress, rebuke from higher officials, political pressure, lack of leisure time with family, etc. Reports say that 45 police officials have committed suicide in the last 5 years and 18 in the last year alone. Now, former DGP TP Senkumar has come up with some suggestions in order to help the police force overcome this serious situation.
According to Senkumar, the entire police force should work as a team. He said, "Assign only legal matters to the police. The senior officials should give proper advice when required. The officers must also be given holidays for emergency needs." He also suggested meditation as the best way to overcome work stress. The former DGP posted his suggestions on his Facebook page.
Senkumar also added that the authorities should make sure that proper counseling must be given to those who feel work stress. The officers must be given special training on new rules and procedures. He also urged the authorities to avoid issuing unnecessary transfer order which can affect the mental strength of the officers. He also said that those who cannot handle any kind of stress must avoid joining the force and should be satisfied with their limited income. The former DGP concluded by asking the officials to be well aware of the management principle, "When the top manager shouts, the dog will bark."
