THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Motor Vehicle Department has started imposing huge fine on traffic violations. A heavy fine will have to be paid from now on if anyone seen riding two wheelers without helmets and for drunk driving. Thrissur city police commissioner G H Yathish Chandra is trying to make the public aware on the penalty imposed from traffic violators.
Chandra gives an apt reply to those who said wearing helmet causes hair loss. Yatish Chandra said that if you wear a helmet, only your hair will go and not your head. If a vehicle is driven by a minor, then the owner will have to undergo prison for three years and will have to pay a fine of Rs 25000. The registration certificate of the vehicle will be cancelled for a year. The minor can apply for the license only after he turns 25.
Drunk driving will cost the driver a fine of Rs10,000 and six months in jail. If the offence is repeated, he will have to pay a fine of Rs 15000 and the jail term will be two years, Transport Minister A K Saseendran said. The amendment brought by the centre has come into effect from today, September 1, 2019. Helmets have been made compulsory for pillion riders. Vehicle inspection will be digitalised soon.
