NEW DELHI: Latest reports suggest that the Central government is planning to introduce massive face recognition system which will enable authorities to identify every citizen with the help of CCTV cameras. It is international media Bloomberg which reported that the government will kick off the initial procedures for the face recognition program by the beginning of the next month. Reports also suggest that the program will follow the Chinese model.
The new system will be linked to the database which includes details of the passports of citizens, criminals, missing persons and unidentified dead bodies. It is widely believed that once the system gets implemented, entire citizens of the country will be monitored by the government agencies. This has led to tension among many who believe that the system can cause serious privacy issues in the country.
According to sources, the system is being considered as an effort to strengthen the police system. However, as several questions have been raised about the data getting leaked from the Aadhaar system, the government is concerned about the new program's acceptance among the public.
Meanwhile, Security forces have reportedly welcomed the face recognition system as they feel it can be used to improve national security and reduce trafficking of drugs and other antisocial elements.
