KOCHI: The Maradu flats will be evicted from Sunday onwards following the order of the Supreme Court. The flats will be razed from October 11 and by February 2020 the remains will be cleared. The action plan will be submitted in the Supreme Court tomorrow. Meantime, power and water supply lines to the flats have been disconnected. The notice mentioning the snapping of water supply will be stuck in the flats soon. The owners termed the action as gross human rights violation. The residents are staging protest in front of the flats.

A decision has been taken to snap the gas supply also. The government decided to take the extreme step before the demolition of flats considering residents protest. Soon after the power and water supply lines were disconnected, the residents starting staging protests. They have stored kerosene lamps and candles in case the power supply is disconnected.

Meanwhile, the cabinet meeting has evaluated that as many as 1800 complexes built in different parts of the state in the same manner will have to be demolished. The cabinet discussed the issue yesterday based on the report of chief secretary Tom Jose who appeared directly in the Supreme Court on the issue. A decision has been taken to speed up the proceedings as directed by the court. Maradu Municipality will award the contract to the selected companies from six eligible companies ready to demolish the flats.
