KOTTAYAM: Mani C Kappan, the NCP candidate backed by the LDF, has won the Pala by-polls which was necessitated following the demise of Kerala Congress (Mani) chief K M Mani. Kappan won the polls after defeating UDF candidate Jose Tom Pullikunnel by over 2943 votes. It is a historic win for him.
The LDF made great strides in the panchayats which traditionally supported the UDF.
Mani had represented Pala since 1965 and the constituency will see a new MLA after a gap of over five decades.
Surrounded by supporters, a beaming Kappan said he was certain of his win and will create history. Everyone wants a change, he said.
Surveys had predicted the win of Jose Tom, but Kappan had sabotaged all that expectations. Kappan was leading in all panchayats except Mutholi. Kappan had lost thrice to K M Mani.
Infighting started in the Kerala Congress from the time Kappan was leading. Senior leader P J Joseph alleged that the votes of Jose K Mani went to the LDF. However, UDF candidate Jose Tom said the BJP cross-voted for the LDF in Ramapuram. Meantime, Mani C Kappan said that he got the votes of the UDF. The lead level in Ramapuram indicates the win, said Kappan.
