NEW DELHI: The police have taken case against 50 including filmmakers, artists, social workers and individuals from different fields for writing a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi sharing their concern on growing cases of lynching. The FIR was registered against them by the Muzafarpur police. The case has been registered against writer Ramachandra Guha, directors Mani Ratnam, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Aparna Sen. The case was registered on the complaint of advocate Sudheer Kumar Oja alleging that the things mentioned in the letter has tarnished the image of the country and undermined the impressive performance of the Prime Minister and supporting secessionist tendencies.
On the plea of Oja, Chief Judicial Magistrate Suryakanth Tiwari had two months back ordered to register case against them. The FIR has been registered under the provisions of treason, public nuisance, persecution of religious feelings and breach of peace.
The name of Lord Ram has become a harbinger of murder in the country and requested to prevent this, mentioned the letter to Modi. Apart from Revathy and Adoor, Shyam Benegal, bollywood director Anurag Kashyap, actress Konkana Sen and Soumitro Chatterjee have signed the letter.
‘Jai Shri Ram' has become a provocative 'war-cry' today. Most people in the country consider chanting of Rama as sacred. Should not permit them to taint that name and sought an end to it. Between January 1, 2009 and October 29, 2018, 254 murders were committed over religion in the country. There were 840 incidents of violence against dalits in 2016 alone. The film makers asked dear Prime Minister, what action have you taken?
