KOLANCHERY: This shop offers everything at a discounted price. You can bring a container and take home whatever you want-be it milk or lotion, rice or flour. But don’t come in with a plastic cover.
Bittu John, an M.Tech graduate, has a green supermarket in which you can weigh groceries by yourself and give the product at the counter after sticking the price sticker on to it.
At first, many called him mad. Slowly, people started supporting. Now, over two hundred people come to his store to support his war against plastic. After 10 months of opening, now his business is in profit. Bittu, a native of Kothamangalam, started this job after leaving a really good job in Bengaluru.
In a trip to London three years back, Bittu came across such a supermarket and wanted to start a similar shop in his native place. It took him one and a half years to prepare this supermarket after importing special cans and others from abroad.
Only biscuit, napkin and children’s powders are in plastic, which he plans to change soon.
For those who didn’t bring bottles, there is a special Chinese bottle in the shop which costs Rs 100. If they can bring the bottle back after washing and drying it, the full amount will be refunded. Cloth bag will get Rs 15.
Imported cleaning lotions, detergents, handwash products, and others are kept in big cans which are given in bottles. Toothbrushes made of bamboo are also available.
