KOZHIKODE: The CPM urged to withdraw the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) charged on the youths identified as Alan Suhaib and Thaha Fazal arrested from Pantheerankavu in Kozhikode alleging Maoist links. The CPM area committee passed a resolution against the police on the incident.

The resolution cited that UAPA cannot be charged if a person distributes pamphlets or notices and it was imposed on the youths in a hurry. The action of the police is violation of democratic rights and it is a misuse of it, the area committee meet opined. The CPM Kozhikode south area committee demanded that action be withdrawn.

‘The resolution demanded to withdraw UAPA charged on Alan Suhaib and Thaha Fazal for allegedly being Maoist sympathisers. Possession of pamphlets or notices is not a crime for UAPA. As soon as they were arrested, they were charged under UAPA for Maoist links. The action of the police is violation of democratic rights. It is also a misuse of UAPA law to impose a sentence of imprisonment without trial and discrimination. The action should be withdrawn-said the resolution of CPM Kozhikode south area committee.’
