THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief of Disaster Risk Reduction in the UN Environment Programme Muralee Thummarakudy has come out to warn about a big catastrophe that is going to hit Kerala.

He writes on his Facebook that the next big calamity that is going to happen in Kerala is inferno in some multi-storey building.

“But our Fire force doesn’t have the equipment or training to handle the situation. I have been saying this for quite some time now. A boy used to play prank on people saying that a “tiger is coming…tiger is coming”. But when the tiger came really, no one was there to mind his words.

People living in high-rise building also don’t know how to handle the situation when their apartment catches fire. Because of all these reasons, the fire will worsen into a calamity that will kill dozens of people. This will certainly happen someday soon but I can’t say how many will die and when this will happen.

What pains me is no step is taken by authorities concerned to face this situation, despite the warnings given. There is Chanakya’s advice that we should learn lessons from other’s experience but if try to learn lesson from our own experience, we will not live long,” he says.
