KOCHI: Kerala high court has issued special instructions, asking the police not to chase and catch motorists violating helmet rule as well as other rules and instead, resort to technical means to find out the violations.
“The police should follow the DGP’s circular dated 2012. The digital technology should be used for examination and there should be renovation of traffic signals,” the high court pointed out.
Meanwhile, the Transport department has started awareness campaign for pillion riders as part of making helmet compulsory for them. The notification in this regard will be issued soon. But the police will start levying fine only from December first week.
In the wake of the high court order making helmet wearing mandatory for pillion riders, the police and motor vehicle department have made traffic checking more rampant.
Pillion riders without helmet are now being given warnings. The current decision is to implement the rule strictly after awareness campaigns and allowing ample time to buy the helmet.
Till then, the police will continue with awareness campaign including that through social media.
