SULTHAN BATHERY: The Wayanad district collector directed panchayat secretaries to examine directly the security of schools in Wayanad following the death of Shehla Sherin after bitten by a snake in class. The government should give training to private hospitals on what should be done if a snake bites. In addition the collector has also given direction to the officials of forest department also.
Meantime, classmates of Shehla Sherin revealed that she herself had requested to take her to the hospital soon after the snake bit her. “Shanmughan Sir was taking class at that time. It was then that someone came calling for Sir and soon he went. What we heard first was that a leech bit her. We went and looked. We were wondering whether so much blood will ooze if a leech bites. Meanwhile, Shajil Sir sent us back to class. Blood was still coming from her leg. Sir said bench fell on her leg, a stone hit her, a nail pierced on her leg and all. She was not even able to sit in the bench. Then the class teacher came and sprinkled water on her face. She told the teacher that she is not well and asked them to take her to the hospital. But, she was taken to the hospital only after her father reached, her classmate said.
Shehla, a fifth class student of Government Sarvajana High School was bit by the snake on Wednesday at 3.15 pm. Due to lapses from the side of the teachers, she was taken to the medical college hospital only at 5 pm. Her condition worsened before reaching there and was taken to Chelod Hospital but she died at 6.05 pm on reaching there. Teacher Shajil was suspended over the incident. The chief minister had mentioned that strict action will be taken against those responsible for the incident.
