THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Helmets will be made compulsory for pillion riders from Sunday, December 1, 2019. A fine of Rs 500 will be imposed for violation and Rs 1000 for repeated occurrence of violation. The license will be suspended if the violation is found again.

Riders can’t get away with the use of low-quality helmets or the ones used for industrial purpose. 85 squads and 240 high-speed cameras will be used for the implementation of law.

The High Court order had said the government has no right to say ‘no’ to helmet, and directed to release an order making helmet compulsory for pillion riders and if not the court will intervene, a bench led by chief justice directed.

The court said the state government has an obligation to implement the Central Motor Vehicle Act. The centre amended the law on August 9, 2019 making helmet compulsory for all above four years.

Meantime, Kerala exempted helmet for pillion riders after amending Central Motor Vehicle Act of 1988. The court said the state government has no right to amend the law and asked to amend it. The court criticised the government for their appeal against the order making helmet compulsory for pillion riders.
