NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill after a marathon debate that lasted for over 6 hours. The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Monday.

While 125 members voted for the bill, 105 members voted against it. The bill will now require the president's approval to become a law.

It was Union Home Minister Amit Shah who tabled the bill in the Rajya Sabha. “This bill is not to hurt anyone or person of any religion. There will be no injustice caused to the Muslims of our country. CAB will not hurt the citizenship of Muslims. It is about granting citizenship and not taking away their citizenship," he said. He added that Bill has been brought to rectify a historic blunder -- the partition -- and give a dignified life to non-Muslims of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who fled religious persecution and settled in India before December 31, 2014.

Earlier, the Shiv Sena members had staged a walkout during the voting process.
