KOCHI: As per the statistics provided by the Railway Protection Force (RPF), more than 60% of cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) by the RPF under the Thiruvananthapuram railway division in the last three years was in Ernakulam.
Compared to the previous two years, the data shows a steep rise in the quantity of ganja recovered by RPF in 2019 (till November 30). However, when compared to 2017 and 2018, the number of cases registered in 2019 has declined. “This is because the amount of illegal imports carried by an individual has increased,” said an RPF officer.
“Most of the narcotic products were smuggled through trains running via Andhra Pradesh, Madurai, and Assam. Such products are usually unloaded at Aluva, Ernakulam Town and Ernakulam Junction,” said the officer. Apart from Ernakulam, a number of cases were registered in Thrissur.
