MANGALURU: Journalists including Keralites have been taken into custody in Mangaluru where two were shot dead yesterday in police firing following protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The move is hinted to be part of a restriction on news.

Many including reporters and cameramen who went to report news at Wenlock District Hospital have been taken into custody. Reports say the journalists were detained as part of a campaign to prevent news about the situation in Mangalore.

A police team led by city police commissioner Dr P S Harsha have taken them into custody. Police said the curfew is applicable to journalists also. They are in custody in a police vehicle. Their phones and cameras were also seized.

Security has been beefed up following hints that protests would be staged against yesterday’s police firing. A 48-hour curfew has been announced. The ten taken into custody following yesterday’s clash are being questioned at the Pandavapura Station.

The condition of the person who sustained serious injuries in yesterday’s police firing continues to be critical. Post mortem of the two dead in police firing will be conducted at 10 am. The whole city is under the control of the police. A high level meet will be convened at 10 am under the leadership of ADGP to review the situation.
