KOZHIKODE: Veteran cinematographer Ramachandra Babu (72) breathed his last at Kozhikode Medical College on Saturday evening. He was undergoing treatment at the hospital after he collapsing down due to uneasiness.

The four-time Kerala state award winner had done cinematography for over 125 films including classics such as Nirmalyam, Padayottam, Rathinirvedam, Yavanika, Kanmadam etc.

Born in Chengalpettu district in Tamil Nadu, Ramachandra Babu completed his degree from Loyola college before joining Pune Film Institute for learning cinematography. Babu made his debut through the film Vidyarthikale Ithile Ithile in 1971.

Babu was part of the technological advancement made by the Malayalam movie industry and was behind the camera when the industry shifted from black and white to colour.

Noted cinematographer Ravi K Chandran is his brother.
