NEW DELHI: A day after he tweeted condemning the violence at his alma mater Jawaharlal Nehru University, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said there was no ‘tukde tukde’ gang there when he was a student.
“On JNU issue, what I have to say, I have said yesterday. I can certainly tell you when I studied at Jawaharlal Nehru University, we didn’t see any ‘tukde tukde’ gang there,” Jaishankar said on Monday when asked about the situation in the premier university.
The minister was attending a book release event.
“Tukde-Tukde gang” is a term often used by the BJP and right-wing supporters to attack the opposition, particularly Left and Left-backed outfits as well as those who support them. In the context of JNU, it is a term used for those the right wing thinks have a mindset that calls for the dismemberment of India.
On Sunday, Jaishankar had promptly condemned the violence saying it was completely against the tradition and culture of the university. The violence left almost three dozen students and teachers injured who needed to be hospitalized overnight.
The Left-backed JNU students’ union has accused the BJP’s students’ wing ABVP of orchestrating the attack and blamed the police of responding quickly enough to distress calls. The ABVP in turn, blamed the JNUSU of attacking its members.
On Monday, the Delhi Police said they have gathered vital clues and will solve the case soon.
