THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Now onward, if cops come across any drunkards lying on the roadsides, they will turn a blind eye. They will pass by without bothering to attend them. In case any policeman goes to attend him, he may face action.

This changed approach follows the DGP’s new set of instructions, which asks policemen not to rush help to drunkards on road. The instruction was given recently in the meeting held in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The meeting, held in Thrissur police academy in the new year, was attended by SHOs and Station writers. The police men were also told to avoid cases of custodial torture and custodial deaths.

“Those who create mischief after drinking a lot should never be taken to the police stations, especially during night hours. Instead, the fracas should be resolved through the mediation of neigbours and relatives.

Habitual offenders and those providing threat to society should be provided treatment as per norms," instructed the DGP.
