THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The cabinet Monday approved the draft for local self govt ward reorganisation. The governor has so far not signed the ordinance for ward re-organisation. However, the cabinet convened here today decided to go ahead with the decision as per the ordinance. The governor has yet to sign or return the ordinance.
As a dispute exists between the government and the governor, the bill has been incorporated into the same provisions of the ordinance. The bill is being drafted as an alternative to the crisis continuing for 20 days. The government is planning to pass the bill after presenting it in the assembly. The government will also submit a recommendation to the governor to start the assembly session from January 30.
Meantime, a decision has been taken in the cabinet not to implement National Population Register (NPR). Central census commissioner and census director of the state will be informed that they will not cooperate with NPR but only with census.
The government points out that if tried to conduct NPR along with census, widespread protests will be witnessed in Kerala. The government's decision comes amid concerns over National Register of Citizens (NRC).
