THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Police have informed the court that the two men accused of gunning and killing ASI at Kaliyikkavila have terror links. They said they had evidence for this.
The defence counsel argued that there was chances of the accused getting killed if they were sent to police custody. Considering this point, the court postponed the pronouncement of the order regarding the police custody of the accused to Tuesday.
Main accused Abdul Shameem and Thoufeek were produced in the Nagercoil court under heavy security on Monday. The police requested for 28 days’ custody of the accused for questioning and collecting evidence, citing their terror connections as the reason.
The prosecution argued that the accused had confessed to killing the ASI and having connection with terrorist organisations that indulge in anti-national activities.
Meanwhile, defence advocates from Madurai reached the court, despite rumours that they would be blocked. They maintained in the court that there was no evidence against the accused in order to invoke UAPA against them.
Later the judge adjourned the court and informed that the verdict would be delivered on Tuesday at 3 pm. The accused were shifted to Tirunelveli jail. The mother of an accused, meanwhile, said that she feared that the police might shoot and kill her son.
The relatives have also filed a habeas corpus petition for the custody of the accused.
