ALAPPUZHA: The export of fish from India was severely affected after China suspended import of fish in the wake of Coronavirus outbreak. The fish exported to China from Kerala are crab, Indian anchovy, Escualosa thoracata and Indian mackerel.

Following the slump in the export of fish, the market price of fish in India has also come down. The crab that cost Rs 1250 per kg now cost only Rs 200-250 now.

Though the fish is also exported to Dubai and Singapore, more quantities are exported to China.

Crab fished out from backwaters are of white and red types and these were China’s favourites. Since the other day, agencies procuring crabs from backwaters and farms have been doing it at reduced prices.

From January to November last year, crab loads worth Rs 7000 crore had been exported to China from Kerala.
