THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Despite opposing The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act initially, it appears that the state government has benefitted the most because of the hike in fines for violation of traffic rules. According to sources, the safe zone section alone of the Motor Vehicle department has contributed over Rs 6.50 crores to the state treasury in the last 4 months.
With the Amended Act coming into effect on September 26 last year, it was feared that the state government will face backlash from the public. Following this, the government had temporarily frozen the new fine rates till November. Later, it announced that the fine amounts will be revised to comparatively lower amounts.
It is learnt that a total of 65,655 traffic violation cases were registered in the state in the last four months.
