NEW DELHI: As uncertainty looms over the death sentence of the convicts in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case (scheduled for February 1), the mother of the victim, Asha Devi, said that she is still waiting for justice to delivered. The release of the minor in this case has sent a wrong message to the society, she added. She pointed out that age was not a barrier when the convict dished out cruelty to her daughter.

The sixth accused in the case who was declared as a "minor" by the Juvenile Justice Board, was released in December 2015 after completing his full three-year sentence behind bars. The minor was earlier described as the most brutal of the six accused by the Delhi Police in its charge sheet on the 2012 gang-rape and murder case.

“Capital punishment for the convicts is not just for Nirbhaya’s mother, but for all the parents in this country,” she added. Asha Devi was speaking to a Malayalam news channel when she made these comments. The Delhi Patiala House Court is set to hear the convicts’ plea on the death warrants on Friday.

The Tihar jail administration officials will file a status report on the convicts' petition seeking a stay on the execution. On a related note, the Supreme Court will hear the request by the central government to reconsider the provisions available to prisoners on death row.
