jail-cafe

KOZHIKODE: On the back of the success of 'Jail Chappathi', the prison authorities are coming up with another venture-'Jail Cafe'. The first outlet will be open at the mini bypass road opposite the Comtrust Eye Hospital. The government has recognized the suggestion of the Kozhikode district jail authority in principle. Once the procedures are completed, the outlet will be opened. The authority plans to follow the Indian Coffee House model and open more outlets if the Kozhikode model is successful.

This is the first public food outlet opened by the Department of Prisons in the state. The idea is to ensure work practice for the inmates as well as provide good quality food to the public at a nominal rate. The vegetables grown within the jail compound will be primarily used for cooking. There will be chicken and egg dishes on the menu. There are plans to do poultry farming inside the jail compound.

Fish won't be part of the menu due to the fluctuating fish prices.

Cooking and cleaning of dishes will be done by jail inmates while cashier, waiters and cleaning workers will be from outside. Good mannered inmates will also be considered.

Comtrust Eye Hospital junction has become one of the busiest places, but there aren't any good hotels nearby. The place was considered also because the Palayam vegetable market is being shifted here.
