LOS ANGELES: South Korean film Parasite, directed by Bong Joon Ho, created history by winning the Best Picture award at the 92nd Academy Awards. The film, which became the first non-English speaking film to win the prestigious award, has also earned other prominent awards including the award for the Best Director.

Joaquin Phoenix has been adjudged as the best actor for his performance in the film 'Joker'. Phoenix, who was the favourite to win the Oscars, won the prestigious award despite tough competition from popular actors such as Adam Driver and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Renee Zellweger, who played Judy Garland in the biopic of the popular singer and movie star, won the best actress award.

Parasite, which tells the story of a poor family which worms its way through a rich and gullible household to tragi-comic results, was also up against seven other films: 'Ford V. Ferrari,' 'The Irishman,' 'Jojo Rabbit,' 'Joker,' 'Little Women,' 'Marriage Story' and 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'.

The South Korean film has been on an unstoppable march since its debut at the Cannes Film Festival where it became the first South Korean film to win the top, Palme d'Or, award.

The universal love and acclaim that the film has been receiving warmed the hearts of even the notoriously conservative Academy voters, leading up to a historic night that will pave the way for other international films.
