KANNUR: 22-year-old Sharnya, accused of killing her baby by hurling him onto the granite sea wall at Thayyil in Kannur, is being kept in jail under 24X7 close watch of the guards.

The one-and-a-half-year old child was sleeping beside her husband at that night when she clandestinely carried her baby and walked to the sea shore. First she thought of throwing him into the sea but changed the idea, fearing that the body would be washed ashore.

After killing the child, in order to live with her paramour, Sharnaya tried to pass the blame onto her husband Pranav. But the police’ fool-proof probe brought out the truth, following which she was lodged in Kannur women’s jail.

Sharanya is now under mental depression due to guilt for having killed her baby and for getting caught. When she was taken to her hometown for collecting evidence, she was heckled by the irate locals and neighbours.

Jail authorities believe that all these incidents have affected Sharanya’s mental state. Therefore, counselling will be given to her in the jail. Currently, she is in the dormitory where remand prisoners have been lodged.

On August 24, 2018, an accused called Soumya was found hanging from a cashew tree branch inside the compound of Kannur jail.
Soumya was an accused in a sensational case related to the serial killing of her family members by poisoning them at different times. Following this, about five jail staff were suspended.

Sharanya is also undergoing the same mental state Soumya had gone through. The jail authorities don’t want a repeat of Soumya episode and therefore, woman police officers have been appointed on shift-basis to keep a close eye on Sharanya through day and night.
